The Green Heart Project is the creation of a nature reserve at the frontlines of rainforest protection and reforestation action in Ecuador's northeastern Amazon. The nature reserve ensures that forests remain standing and those area that were destroyed and contaminated by the fossil fuel industry are reforested and come back to life. The Green Heart project shows that through resilience, collaboration and a deep caring for the Earth transformation is possible.
The Amazon rainforest is one of the most biodiverse tropical rainforest and the biggest source of fresh water on the planet. When a forest is lost anywhere, people feel it everywhere. All life depends on the health and balance of the planet’s ecosystems. If the current trends continue, 50% of the rainforests will be degraded and deforested by 2020 leading to an ecological collapse of the Earth's heart pump.

Das Projekt Green Heart ist ein einzigartiges Naturreservats im Spannungsfeld zwischen der Rohstoffabbauenden-Großindustrie und nachhaltigem Regendwaldschutz in Ecuador’s nordöstlichem Amazonas. Das Naturreservat stellt sicher, dass die Wälder erhalten bleiben und jene Gebiete, die von der fossilen Brennstoffindustrie bereits zerstört und kontaminiert wurden, wieder aufgeforstet werden und zu neuem Leben erwachen. Das Green Heart-Projekt zeigt, dass durch Durchhaltevermögen, Zusammenarbeit und eine tiefe Fürsorge für die Erde erfolgreicher Naturschutz und Transformation möglich sind.
Der Amazonas-Regenwald ist der tropische Regenwald mit der höchsten Biodiversität und den größten Frischwasservorkommen auf dem Planeten. Wenn ein Wald irgendwo verloren geht, werden es die Menschen überall spüren. Alles Leben hängt von der Gesundheit und der Balance des Ökosystems Erde ab. Wenn die gegenwärtigen Trends vorangehen, wird 50% des Regenwalds bis 2020 zerstört und abgeholzt sein, was zu einem ökologischen Kollaps der Herzpumpe unserer Erde führt.

Tropical forest restoration
Surrounded by oil operations and palm oil plantations, the Green Heart project is located in the historical oil-boom area in the northeastern Amazon of Ecuador known for the biggest man-made environmental disaster in history. Hectare by hectare the rainforest is being reforested with native trees and fruits, re-establishing a food forest that is a natural food resource for the human and wildlife inhabitants. The Green Heart project demonstrates that even after being exploited, contaminated, and destroyed rainforests can be reforested with patient work and deep dedication.

Aufforstung des Waldes
Umringt von Ölplattformen und Palmölplantagen, im historischen Öl-Rausch Gebiet im nordöstlichen Amazonas von Ecuador, forstet das Projekt den Regenwald Hektar für Hektar mit heimischen Bäumen und Früchten auf. Damit wird der Wald wieder zum „Food Forest“ – einem Wald, der auf natürlichem Wege für Mensch und Tiere Nahrung spendet. Green Heart zeigt, dass Wälder auch nachdem sie zerstört und kontaminiert wurden mit viel Geduld und Hingabe wiederaufgebaut werden können.

Biodiversity conservation
So far, the reforestation and conservation efforts have succeeded in the return of five different species of monkeys, and the biodiversity index is growing daily with birds, trees, insects, mammals, fungi and more. Through the legal designated area of the nature reserve, no cutting of trees or poaching of wildlife is possible, nor permits for resource extraction purposes can be given. This allows the flora and fauna, the wildlife and the inhabitants of the jungle to find refuge on this land. Thus, they have a permanent home that is protected for the long-term.

Erhalt von Biodiversität
Schon heute haben Aufforstung und die Erhaltungsmaßnahmen gezeigt, dass fünf verschiedene Affenarten zurückgekehrt sind. Der Biodiversitäts-Index wächst jeden Tag und neue Spezies, darunter Vögel, Bäume, Insekten, Säugetiere, Pilze kommen zurück. Durch den Schutz des Naturreservats können weder weitere Bäume abgeholzt werden, noch die Erlaubnis für den Abbau von Rohstoffen erteilt werden. Das erlaubt der Flora und Fauna, den Bewohnern des Dschungels Zuflucht auf diesem Land und ein langfristig geschütztes Zuhause zu finden.

Research and education
The reforestation and conservation efforts have already ignited the interest of local institutes for research and educational purposes. Collaborations with local universities have been initiated to use the protected area as a research and training facility for faculty and students including eco-tourism, biology, and nature sciences. The objective is to gather valuable biological data to be used to further protect the wildlife and inhabitants of this species-rich Amazon jungle.

Forschung und Bildung
Die Aufforstungsmaßnahmen haben bereits das Interesse von lokalen Instituten für Forschungszwecke und Bildungsmaßnahmen geweckt. Es gibt Kooperationsinitiativen mit lokalen Universitäten das geschützte Gebiet als Forschungs- und Trainingsstätte für Lehrkräfte und Schüler zu nutzen, darunter Öko-Tourismus, Biologie und Naturwissenschaften. Ziel ist es, dass wertvolle biologische Daten gesammelt werden und diese dem Schutz der Naturlandschaften und ihrer Bewohner im artenreichen Amazonasregendwald zu Gute kommen.

“Amisacho is a unique place,
which shows that a tropical forest can be restored after being exploited and it’s soil denigrated by petroleum extraction, agriculture, and cattle raising. It started to fill up with flora and fauna at an astonishing rate, transforming it from a simple muddy land with rough grasses into a small tropical forest of the Amazon region. After more than a decade, the results are within sight. With the reforested trees, more orchids and natural bromeliads have come, creating a refuge for all kinds of insects, reptiles, and mammals typical of the Amazonian forests. It is necessary to continue our reforestation and conservation efforts to completely reestablish and secure the food and natural habitat of the native animals and plants that live here in the jungle.”

„Amisacho ist ein einzigartiger Ort,
an dem wir zeigen, dass wir den Tropenwald wiederherstellen können, nachdem er durch Ölförderung, Landwirtschaft und Viehzucht ausgebeutet und zerstört wurde.
Nach einem Jahrzent hat sich der Ort wieder mit einer unglaublichen Flora und Fauna gefüllt, und vom einfachen, schlammigen Land mit rauen Weiden zu einem kleinen tropischen Wald der Amazonasregion transformiert. Mit dem wieder aufgeforsteten Wald wurden viele Orchideen und natürliche Bromelien zu einem Refugium für alle Arten von Insekten, Reptilien und Säugetieren, die typisch für die Wälder im Amazonasgebiet sind. Es ist nötig mit der Aufforstung fortzufahren, um nach und nach die Nahrung und den Lebensraum der hier lebenden Tiere wieder vollkommen herzustellen und zu sichern.”
